Success stories Caldema
Seventy-five thousand reais that never had to be spent.
Caldema builds boilers and equipment for sugar mills, pulp and paper, mining and petrochemicals. In 2011 it bought Tz0 Metering to answer a simple question nobody could answer: of the licences the company pays for, which ones are actually being used?
The starting point
Renewing licences in the dark.
The company was spending on software purchases and renewals with no way to measure the return. A request came in, the user said they needed it, IT had no way to argue — and the licence was bought. The mistake only showed up in the following year budget, diluted.
At the time we bought Metering to see what people were actually using.

What the metering showed
Ten licences, R$ 7,500 each, none of them needed.
There was a request for ten licences of an expensive package — R$ 7,500 per seat, R$ 75,000 in total. Before approving it, IT looked at the real usage measured by Tz0. None of the ten was needed. What the report exposed was a problem of procedure, not a shortage of licences; once the procedure was fixed, the purchase ceased to exist. The same survey turned up the case the team still tells today: the employee who argued hardest for the software had used it, over a whole month, for forty-nine seconds.
That is where we found out, for example, that the person who most claimed to need the software had used it for only 49 seconds in the month.

What runs there
One module, one question.
Caldema did not buy a suite. It bought the module that answers the question that was costing money — more than one hundred and fifty licences of it in the first purchase alone.
What changed
The request became a query.
Today a licence request goes through a check before it becomes a purchase. When the report shows that an existing licence is idle, it is reassigned instead of duplicated. The cumulative return the IT coordination attributes to the module is past one hundred thousand reais — almost all of it in spending that never happened.
Today we can see where, how and for how long people are using the software.

If we find that someone is not using it, we pass it on to somebody else.

Why they renew
The return on not buying.
Caldema argument is not about individual productivity — it is about software contracts. Measuring usage changes where IT stands in a licensing negotiation, because it replaces what the user claims with a number that can be checked.
Just by not having to install it, not having to buy a licence we did not need, the return is already large. With the product we have had at least R$ 100,000 in return on the investment.
